Oxford Uzbek Studies Programme cohort arrives in Tashkent
Students and academics from the University of Oxford have arrived in Tashkent to attend a Summer School organised as part of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies’ Uzbek Studies Programme.
The Programme was launched at Oxford in October 2025 during a visit by Ms Saida Mirziyoyeva, Head of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Uzbekistan. It supports the study of Uzbek and Chagatai at Oxford, alongside the history, literature and culture of Uzbekistan and Central Asia.
During the launch, Professor Nicolai Sinai, Vice-Chair of the Faculty, presented Ms Mirziyoyeva with a recognition of her work towards the criminalisation of domestic violence in Uzbekistan.
The Programme includes collaboration with Alisher Navoi Tashkent State University of the Uzbek Language and Literature. As part of this collaboration, the Oxford cohort arrived in Tashkent in late August 2026 to participate in an intensive Summer School.
