Dr Matthew Erie, Associate Professor of the University of Oxford’s Oriental Institute, has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant of €1.5 million for his project, “Illiberal Law & Development: China and the World.” The ERC bestows the Starting Grant to promising early-career researchers with two to seven years experience after obtaining the Ph.D.
Dr. Erie’s project examines the impact of Chinese investment, trade, and financing on the legal modernization of developing or fragile states as a novel adaptation of and departure from traditional Western-led liberal law and development models.
The Oriental Institute is immensely proud of Dr. Erie for his great achievement in securing this award.
