It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our esteemed former colleague, Professor Wilferd Madelung (1930-2023). Wilferd was Laudian Professor of Arabic from 1978 to 1998 and was highly respected as a scholar of Iranian history. In 2013, he was awarded the Farabi International Award by the Iranian Ministry of Islamic Guidance and Culture for his significant contributions to the fields of Islamic and Iranian studies. We extend our deepest condolences to Wilferd's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Wilferd is fondly remembered by our colleagues and will be missed.
Professor Wilferd Madelung’s funeral will take place at 2pm, on Thursday 25 May in the Chapel of St John’s College. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the dining room of the Lodgings.
