Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies

Founded in 2018, the CHJS coordinates research activities in the field of Hebrew language, literature and Jewish Studies at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies. It is supported by and works in close collaboration with the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.

The CHJS houses a number of research projects. These currently include the AHRC/DFG collaboration with the University of Munich, Jewish Book Culture in the Islamicate World under the direction of Professor Judith Olszowy-Schlanger (AMES) and Professor Ronny Vollandt (LMU-Munich). In the field of Digital Humanities, the CHJS hosts an international digital palaeography project Hebrew Palaeography Album (HebrewPal), created in collaboration with JBCIW and with the project Hebrew Manuscripts in the Digital Age of the École Pratique des Hautes Études, PSL, Paris, funded by the Rothschild Foundation Europe. HebrewPal is part of the Digital Scholarship @ Oxford (DiSc) programme and participates in a major ERC-Synergy Programme Migrations of Textual and Scribal Traditions via Large-Scale Computational Analysis of Medieval Manuscripts in Hebrew Script (MiDRASH).

The CHJS also hosts post-doctoral early career researchers, such as the Kennicott Fellowship in Hebrew Studies and post-doctoral positions funded by external bodies. The director of the CHJS is Professor Judith Olszowy-Schlanger.
