Marathi

With almost a hundred million speakers as first or second language (2011), Marāṭhī is one of the largest languages of India. With about eight hundred years of documented literary history, Marāṭhī has also one of the oldest and richest living literatures of the subcontinent.

The course in elementary Marāṭhī is designed for beginners with a knowledge of another Indian language and of the Devanagari script. Through interactive lessons, students will explore basic grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, while also gaining insights into the cultural heritage of Maharashtra. The course largely follows the second edition of Learning Marathi Through English by Kalyan Kale and Anjali Soman and is complemented with extra material.

Professor Imre Bangha teaches Marathi grammar on Thursdays, and Dr Ashwini Mokashi conducts practice sessions on Fridays.

The course is primarily offered as a Language Option for students taking MPhil or MSc in Modern South Asian Studies and welcomes committed learners from beyond these courses subject to the usual conditions of the Faculty.
