The Faculty is delighted to announce that John Lowe has been awarded the title of Professor by the University of Oxford as part of the 2026 Recognition of Distinction exercise.
This prestigious distinction recognises Professor Lowe’s significant and sustained academic contributions to the University and his achievements in his field.
Professor Lowe’s research focuses primarily on Sanskrit language and linguistics and Indo-Iranian historical philology, encompassing Vedic and Classical Sanskrit as well as the ancient Indian grammatical tradition. His research also extends to other ancient Indo-Iranian languages, including Avestan and Old Persian, and to theoretical linguistics, particularly syntax and semantics.
Professor Lowe studied Classics and Oriental Studies at Oxford and completed his DPhil at Wolfson College in 2012. Following a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellowship and teaching positions in Linguistics and Indo-Iranian Philology at Oxford, he was appointed Associate Professor of Sanskrit in 2019. He is also a Governing Body Fellow of Wolfson College.
