‘The Middle’? A Comparison between Ancient Egyptian and Egyptological Sub-Elite Concepts. A Socio-Linguistic Analysis of Prosopographical Data on Stelae from Middle Kingdom Abydos.

Biography:
Erik L. Reissmann studied Archaeology and Egyptology at the Universities in Cologne and Vienna, obtaining a MA in Egyptology in 2024, with a thesis on: “Communication and Role Concepts: Rhetoric and Semantics in the Autobiographical Inscriptions of the Normachs’ Tombs at Beni Hassan.” He was awarded the Barns Studentship for Egyptology at The Queen’s College, University of Oxford, and is currently researching for his DPhil in Egyptology. Parallel to his studies, he has done internships at various institutions, i.a. at The Berlin Egyptian Museum and the German Archaeological Institute, Cairo Department. He has taken part in the excavations of the Austrian Archaeological Institute at Kom Ombo in Upper Egypt and has started volunteering at the Griffith Institute, Oxford.
Educational Background:
Master of Arts in Egyptology, from the University of Vienna, Austria, in May 2024 (with distinction).
Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology, majoring in Egyptology, from the University of Cologne, Germany, in July 2021.
Research interests:
Middle Kingdom history, sociological approaches in Egyptology, ancient Egyptian literature and poetry, archaeology, and history of research.
