Positions:

Faculty / College Address:

Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies / University College

Email Address:

Research Interests:

My main research interests include Demotic and Greek papyrology, especially the socio-economic history of Graeco-Roman Egypt, and topics like bilingualism, prosopography and onomastic.

Current Projects:

  • Edition and analysis of the demotic henu-agreements from Soknopaiu Nesos/Dimê (with Sandra Lippert, CNRS, Paris)
  • Names and Naming in Graeco-Roman Egypt
  • Edition of Ptolemaic documentary texts from Dimê (with Cyprian Fong, University of Basel)

Together with Patrick Sänger, Münster and Gesa Schenke, Münster, I am co-editor of the new book series Egypt from the Ptolemies to the Early Middle Ages (EPEMA). This series is dedicated to the study of post-pharaonic Egypt. It focuses on the unusually rich and diverse written and material evidence illustrating life in Egypt during the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and early Arab periods. EPEMA provides a forum for the publication of monographs, edited volumes, and congress proceedings devoted to the study of culture and society from various different angles. Submitted manuscripts are subject to a double-blind peer review process.

I am a member of the Advisory Board of the ERC project "From Texts to Literature: Demotic Egyptian Papyri and the Formation of the Hebrew Bible (DEMBIB)" with Prof. Dr. Dr. Bernd U. Schipper as principal investigator. The project correlates newly accessible Demotic papyri with biblical literature. Like the Hebrew Bible, the Demotic literature from Egypt is rooted in a scribal culture and displays significant parallels to biblical literature. The DEMBIB project aims to investigate the structural parallels between Demotic literature and the Hebrew Bible; identify the compositional strategies of Demotic and biblical literature; and contextualise these literary characteristics in the socio-historical situation of the 6th–3rd c. BCE when a scribal elite in Egypt and “Israel” faced similar challenges, such as a changing socio-cultural environment and a marginalization of traditional temples. The specific approach of DEMBIB lies in its cross-cultural comparison of newly discovered Egyptian papyri and the Hebrew Bible with experts on both text corpora working and collaborating together. By analyzing similar literary processes in Demotic Egyptian and biblical literature, the project wants to shed light on the dynamics between a distinct scribal culture and its socio-historical context.

Courses Taught:

My teaching covers a broad variety of aspects of ancient Egypt: history, civilization, religion, society, religion and everyday life. In the field of Egyptian languages and texts my teaching focuses on Middle Egyptian, demotic, Coptic and Ptolemaic Hieroglyphs.

Supervision:

I enjoy supervising research about the Graeco-Roman period, especially social and economic topics, onomastics, and multilingualism, and I welcome applications in these areas.
