Biography
My research focuses on the relationship between linguistic form and literary expression in Old Japanese. I am particularly interested in how linguistic patterns shape the possibilities of literary expression, and how these possibilities are realised in individual texts. One area I am currently investigating is the use of colour adjectives, including the nouns they modify, the contexts in which they occur, and their orthographic representation. I am also interested in natural language processing and use related techniques to develop digital research tools. I am an editor of the Oxford-NINJAL Corpus of Old Japanese.
